Contents The emergence of a new face is not out of cards for this village, yet again. Once they did, so have they embarked on a novel initiative that could well change the face, or else add to the existing one. Kanjikuzhi is a place known for its vegetable cultivation. One who travels via road between Alappuzha and Ernakulam would never have missed the vegetable stalls erected on both sides of the NH- The vegetables cultivated by organic method. One curious fact is that the cultivation of vegetables is done mostly by women. This adds to the revenue of the family to a great extent. But now with the help of the Panchayat the Kudubasree units and other women have embarked on a new cultivation namely ayurvedic plants. One would be amazed to see how these people turned this land into a veggie hot spot. The soil is not alluvial in nature, but sandy that doesnot enhance cultivation, as this is an area situated along the coastal stretch. It is not possible to see even a house without vegetable cultivation. While on my visit I met Shari, a girl who studies in eighth standard. She is cultivating different vegetables in her home. She told that she turned to this venture out of sheer interest. It is she who waters the plants early morning. Her mother helped her in planting the seedlings and from then own its she who takes care of it. She got the spark to cultivate vegetables from school where her PT master along with a group of students started cultivation of vegetables at school. They had a good harvest this year, she says. They nurture the plants during the break and these students find happiness in cultivation than on games. “I like to see the vegetables sprout and then grow into its full size”,says Shari. Now let me say about the meals that I had. I found a small hotel, not the exact word to be used , but a small room erected out of bamboo. This is run by 3 women. You would get only lunch here, with tasty country foods, not costly either. All those who were part of the team, had only one opinion, superb meal that we had in the recent times. Women had form yet another group, a group of 12, who plays Chendamelam. In this group you can find ladies from 18 years of age to 60 years of age. They had started this venture 1 year ago and by this time they had performed in more than 60 stages. These many initiatives by women definitely will help them in empowering themselves and this contributes to their income in a good way too.
