Title Caste and Marriage
Contents Its India's caste system that is one of the most rigid class structures in the world. The new form of violence against women is on the rise, that too at an alarming rate. This demonstrates the extent to which the women are ostracized from society and their freedom curbed. The violence has gone to that extend that deaths are reported from many parts of the country as a daily routine. Reports show that several young women were murdered or died under suspicious circumstances, because of pressure from their families when they tried to marry outside their caste. The most disturbing part of the story is that honour killings do happen in many parts of the country. Quite disturbing to know how little remorse the families seem to feel. Does caste stand above life? After all it’s not the free will of a person to choose a caste, rather its thrust upon them. Though inter caste marriages are protected under Indian law, but only nominally. There is strong resistance to the practice of inter caste marriage. Many deem the practice as unacceptable. But the issue of inter caste marriage is prevalent, threatening to tear many families apart. The issue of caste is tied up with the broader tragedy of honor killings, which are especially common in India's northern states. Here, village caste councils can act as a kind of extralegal force, a force that remains firm making sure that caste boundaries remain firm. Marrying within villages is also considered an offense, because villages are seen as extended families. New cases of killings or harassment appear in the Indian media frequently. But it seems that change could be very slow to come.
