11% of the total households in the country i.e. about 27 million households are headed by women. Kerala holds the top position with 23% having a female as head and among the Union Territories (UTs) Lakshadweep takes the lead. These findings have been revealed in the data released by Minister of State for Home Affairs R P N Singh as part of the results of the first phase of Census 2011 on "House Listing and Housing Census". The proportion of male-headed households has declined by 0.6% in 2011 compared to 2001, while that of households headed by females has increased by 0.5% during the same period. Data also shows that more than 60% of female-headed households have permanent houses, while among SC and ST categories the percentage of female-headed households dips to 55.8% and 33.4%, respectively.
