Renowned social activist Sunitha Krishnan has been appointed as the state advisor to government’s project ‘Nirbhaya’ , a programme aimed at the protection and rehabilitation of women and children who are victims of sexual abuse.Sunitha Krishnan's organisation, Prajwala, for rescue and rehabilitation of sex workers and their children, has shown impressive results in the 15 years of its operation.
Through ‘Nirbhaya’, the Government aims to create a congenial atmosphere for women in the state where they can safety travel even during night. For initiating quick action against crimes towards women, fast track courts will be set up. Special Squads will be formed to protect the women against sexual harassment and for checking sex trade. Awareness classes will be conducted in schools regarding the sexual atrocities against women. Micro mapping facility will also be brought to carry out a detailed study regarding the atrocities to which women are subjected to.
‘Nirbhaya’is being jointly implemented by various government departments like social welfare, SC/ST, police, health, labour and local self government in co-ordination with NGOs.
