News Title Women's panel offers help to Sampath's kin
News Contents The Kerala State Women's Commission has offered help to rehabilitate the impoverished widow of Sampath, who allegedly died in police custody at Palakkad on March 30, and his two babies. Commission chairperson D. Sreedevi told that the commission could take care of Sampath's wife Saritha and the two children, aged two-and-a-half years and two-and-a-half months. The three could be accommodated at the commission's short-stay facility in Thiruvananthapuram and also take special care of the babies. She said the commission was unable to pay any money to her, but could talk to other government authorities if they could do something about it. Rugmini Bhaskaran, member of the Women's Commission, who is in charge of Wayanad and nearby districts, said she would immediately visit Saritha's family, who lives in Meenangadi in Wayanad district, and make arrangements for providing them some temporary relief. She said she would contact the District Collector to see what the district administration could do. She would call the Social Welfare Department and ask them to reach some aid to the distressed family. She would also encourage NGOs and charity organisations to help the family. Sampath, a shop assistant, was the first accused in the murder of Sheela of Puthoor in Palakkad district. Saritha had given birth to their second child on March 12, just 18 days before the controversial death. They had married against their families' wishes. However, for her second childbirth she had gone to her parents' home at Meenangadi in January. Her father, a daily-wage earner, is not keeping good health and is unable to work. The family lives in poor circumstances and is even unable to meet their daily living expenses. With no income and no job, Sairtha, with her two babies, faces an uncertain future. Following a Crime Branch investigation into Sampath's custodial death, over a dozen policemen have been suspended from service. The Kerala High Court, on Tuesday, ordered the CBI to investigate the custodial death. --the hindu
