News Title Snehasparsham project launched
News Contents Minister for Health and Social Welfare P.K. Sreemathy has said the government would provide all possible help for the welfare of the marginalised unwed tribal mothers and their children in the State. Launching the Snehasparsham' project, initiated by Social Security Mission a pension project for the unwed tribal mothers in the State, at the Panchayat Community hall in Mananthavadi on Thursday, Ms. Sreemathy said protecting the marginalised sections was the duty of modern democracy. Though many discussions had been held on the issues of the unwed tribal mothers, nobody could come up with a solution for it, she said. The Snehasparsham project of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government is a permanent solution for the issue, Ms. Sreemathy said. Under this Social Welfare Department project, a monthly aid of Rs.300 would be given to unwed tribal mothers in the State by electronic money order. The Minister said the project was being implemented as per a study report of the State Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Commission. In the first phase, 226 unwed tribal mothers in Wayanad have got the benefit of the scheme. In Thirunelli panchayat, which has the highest number of unwed tribal mothers in the State, 76 women have got the aid. Ms. Sreemathy said the government was planning to implement welfare measures for widows belonging to the poorer sections of the society. The Minister said the government could implement various social welfare schemes for the poorer sections through projects such as 'Mangalya', 'Aswaskiran' and 'Thalolam'. Identity cards for the physically challenged people in the State would be issued by the end of March, Ms. Sreemathy said . All the medical colleges in the State had been equipped with modern facilities to conduct any type of critical or complex surgeries, She said, and added that as much as Rs.600 crore had been spent for purchasing modern apparatus for the five medical colleges in the State within four years.
