News Title Sunita Williams set to zoom into space again
News Contents Indian American astronaut Sunita Williams will zoom into space once again. The 44-year-old Williams, who spent 195 days in space in 2006-07 and set a new record for female astronauts, has been handpicked for a new space expedition set for launch in June 2012. Williams will be joining Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko and Japanese astronaut Akihiko Hoshide on board Soyuz 31, according to a joint announcement by NASA and its international partners, Russia Federal Space Agency and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. The trio, all flight engineers, will join three residents at the International Space Station. Williams will be the station commander of Expedition 33 that will begin with the undocking of Soyuz 30 in September 2012. Three crew members of Soyuz 32, to be launched in October that year, will join Williams, Melenchenko and Hoshide. The International Space Station was Williams’ home away from home from December 9, 2006 to June 22, 2007. The daughter of Gujarat born neuroanatomist Deepak Pandya and Slovak mother Bonnie Pandya, Williams was born in Euclid, Ohio, but regards Needham, Massachusetts as her hometown. She is married to Michael J Williams. The couple have no children. Williams received her commission as an Ensign in the United States Navy from the US Naval Academy in 1987. She has logged over 2,770 flight hours in more than 30 different aircraft. She was selected by NASA in 1998 for astronaut candidate training. During her last space outing, Williams also established another world record for females with four space walks, totalling 29 hours and 17 minutes. This, however, was surpassed by astronaut Peggy Whitson a year in 2008 with her five space walks.
