News Title IT Training for Fisherwomen of Poovar - Certificates Distributed
News Contents The Hon’ble Member of Parliament Dr. Shashi Tharoor gave away the certificates to 100 fisherwomen of Poovar who successfully completed the 45-day free IT training programme atunction held at Sruthi Royal Auditorium, Poovar on 7th July 2010. The training programme was organized by Kerala State IT Mission with a view to empower the women of fishing community through IT skills. Echoing this, Dr.Shashi Tharoor complimented the IT Department for organizing such a programme and said that he was happy to see so many women come forward to complete the training programme successfully. He added, “A woman educated is a family and society educated” and hoped that the women will make use of the IT skills gained as part of the programme. Dr.Rathan U.Kelkar Director, Kerala State IT Mission, in his presidential address said that he was happy to note that this pilot initiative of training women was success and urged the participants to make use of IT in their daily life. The training, conducted with the faculty support from Centre for Development of Imaging Technology (C-DIT), laid impetus on Free and Open Source tools keeping Kerala Government’s directive of promoting free software. The extensive computer training programme covered modules like Introduction to Computer, Introduction to Operating System, Introduction to File System and File Manager, Using Writer in Desktop System OS and Internet. Equal importance was given to theory and practical sessions. Ms.Anitha Justin, a housewife who participated in the programme said, “I did not expect an opportunity to be a part of a training programme like this. It has increased my confidence; I can impart the skills to my children as well now”. Another participant Ms.Julie Raju wants to take up a job and use the skills learnt to build a career, “I found the exercises in Spreadsheet very interesting”. A general opinion that emerged from the participants was that they found the sessions on Internet and email quite fascinating. An evaluation of their IT skills in both theory and practical segments was conducted at the end of the course, in which 15 passed with distinction and 64 with First Class. Enthused by the training programme, the participants also requested the inclusion of a component on Communication Skills. Accordingly, a crash programme on Communication Skills was organized for the participants. The Certificate Distribution ceremony was witnessed by over 100 women and children from the community. Smt Florency Muthaiyyan, President Erikavila Vanitha Sangam, the agency that provided their facility for the training programme; Shri K Jayachandran, Director, Future India Foundation; Adv M Benedict, Trivandrum District Panchayat Member; Smt Ajitha Shashidharan, President, Poovar Grama Panchayat; Smt Jibi Abraham, Controller of Training – C-DIT; Shri P Raveendran, Vice President – Poovar Grama Panchayat, other representatives of the Poovar Panchayat, and Priests from Superior Bethesda Ashram, Pulinkudi also spoke on the occasion.
